An enormous piece of permanent public art, depicting the late Anton Lembede has been installed on the corner of Anton Lembede Street (formerly Smith Street) and Six Durban Club Place to mark the start of the regeneration of Durban Club Place, a dedicated professional and legal quarter in central Durban.

The artwork, entitled ‘Anton, Bachelor of Law’ is the largest privately funded public art piece in KZN and one of the largest in the country, covering just under 600sqm.

Urban Lime Properties commissioned artist Sakhile Mhlongo, a DUT graduate who has also painted portraits of several prominent figures for the City of Durban.

His depiction is of a full length Anton Anton Lembede the lawyer, wearing a trim suit in shades of charcoal, carrying his legal briefcase, striding purposefully towards court.

Jonny Friedman, CEO of Urban Lime Properties said:

“This piece is a direct nod to the extraordinary legal profession in this country and to the youth of South Africa. Lembede was told ‘no’ a thousand times, yet he persevered, becoming a qualified lawyer just prior to the dawn of the apartheid era, proving that the impossible really is possible.”

DURBAN CLUB CHAMBERS

Durban Club Chambers (the former NedBank Building) was completed in 1966 and is the final project and only Durban building by South Africa’s premiere modernist architect Sir Norman Eaton.

Internationally recognised as a prime example of 1960’s modern architecture, the building is being meticulously and painstakingly restored and returned to it’s former glory.

The beautiful cube structure, travertine podiums, water-fountains, vegetation and intricate, suspended filigree screen façade are being restored, repaired and cleaned. All common spaces are being sensitively and carefully refurbished and original features restored, a new reception area and 16-floors of offices will be made available professional firms and businesses across Durban.

Durban Club Chambers was approved in 2016 by the KwaZulu Natal Bar Council as one of just five official buildings in central Durban from which qualified legal professionals are permitted to practice
